Wink was a late 80s early 90s pop duo, with nearly half of their work being covers, from obscure Euro 80s hits to oldies. While their first single, "Sugar Baby Love" was a cover, they didn't get put on the map until their 3rd single, a cover of Kylie Minogue's "Turn It Into Love" which had just come out the same year.
Consisting of Shoko Aida (相田翔子) and Sachiko Suzuki (鈴木早智子), they lasted till 1996 and had to quit from failing sales. They were really a product of late 80s idol groups and I guess couldn't keep up with the times.
While Shoko is still on talk shows and acting, Sachiko has had a bit of scandal with releasing a soft porn movie and cheating with a married actor! But... check out their Wink work... ahem... Wink @ amazon.co.jp

Wink Covers Part 1
Sakamoto Kyu did a few covers, I think. I know Suteki na Timing was a cover of Jimmy Jones' Good Timing. He also covered If You're Happy and You Know It (Shiawase Nara Te o Tatak), Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini (Bikini Style no Ojou-san), Calendar Girl and Kanashiki Rokujyusai (Mustafa).
ReplyDeleteIf you'd like you can download it and share it on your blog.

Some of them aren't on that CD but I can upload them if you like.
Also his song Ue o Muite Arukou was covered in many languages.
Thank you for the info! I don't know much about Sakamoto Kyu other than his "ue o muite arukou" song. I will have to check this out, I'd love to hear his take on them.
ReplyDeleteThanks for allowing me to share it sometime. I've been a fan of your blog for over a year now! ^_^
I'll try to think of more covers off the top of my head.
ReplyDeleteHere is a Sawada Kenji cover of George Harrison's Something and Ozaki Ami's cover of Matsuda Seiko's Tenshi no Wink.
Sawada Kenji - Something
Ozaki Ami - Tenshi no Wink
Sadly I don't have the mp3 for this one this computer but I know Ulfuls covered Sakamoto Kyu's Ashita ga Aru Sa. And then I'm currently working Tokyo Beatniks High Panoramic Series Vol. 2 and it has several covers on it including Johnny's Batman theme, The Cupid's She Loves You and Tokyo Beatles' Can't Buy Me Love. I'll let you know when I upload that.
And here is Sakamoto Kyu's Bikini Style no Ojyou-san.

I'm glad you like the blog. This is a really interesting idea for a blog. It's interesting to hear covers of songs you like or find out a song you like was originally a cover. If you'd like to use any of my uploads, you are free to do so.
Kyaa! Thank you so much for the compliment! I wasn't really sure anyone would have much interest in my idea, but I recently got into researching my own song collection about a year ago, and found it really fascinating. Now I am obsessed with trying to find covers everywhere, LOL. @_@;;;
